In Europe, we generate every year around 89M tonnes of Food Loss and Waste (FLW), accounting for 20% of the total food produced, impacting each stage of the Food Value Chain. In SISTERS, we propose a set of systemic innovations addressed to reduce FLW generated in every stage of the Food Value Chain.
One of the SISTERS’ innovations will be the design and launching of the 1st European Short Chain Platform for farmers to sell their discarded productions.
This feasibility study benchmarks existing solutions in terms of Short Chains in the food sector in Europe as well as existing initiatives in the reduction of Food Losses.
It studies the expectations of a group of Fruits and Vegetables Producers involved in the Sisters Project and analyses the consumers and the market expectations regarding the possible buying of surplus and discarded fruits and vegetables.
It concludes by identifying the core functionalities to incorporate in the Short Chain Platform app to be developed and the key success factors.
