The FOLOU project addresses food loss (FL) at the primary production stage, with the aim to set up all the necessary mechanisms to: (i) measure and estimate, (ii) monitor and report, and (iii) assess the magnitude and impact of food losses. Our approach focuses on:
1. Understanding Food Loss: FOLOU defines FL and develops a behavioral framework to analyze its direct and indirect drivers. We will consolidate findings from literature reviews and stakeholder interviews to gain a comprehensive understanding of FL causes and impacts.
2. Measuring Food Loss: We have established a standardized methodology for FL measurement, including a detailed FL Quantification Manual and innovative tools such as UAVs and AI systems. This framework enables accurate reporting and tracking of FL across various food categories.
3. Training and Dissemination: The project is developing an eLearning center to offer courses on FL management. These courses will cover topics from basic FL concepts to advanced measurement techniques and policy integration.
4. Adopting, collaboration and Outreach: FOLOU actively collaborates with seven European projects and four key platforms, including the Biorefine Cluster and the EU Food Loss and Waste Prevention Hub. Our partnership with the WASTELESS project involves joint webinars and shared activities, enhancing the overall impact of our efforts. Additionally, the FOLOU Twinning Regions Program will engage 7-10 regions, particularly those with high agricultural productivity and interest in FL quantification, to replicate and implement successful practices.
