What is the goal?
What is the goal?
The SISTERS project aims to reduce food loss and waste in the main stages of the Food Value Chain in Europe through innovations targeted to each stage of the chain:
New tools for primary producers for promoting direct and Short Chain sales (farmers); new technological innovations in packaging for processors and retailers; and awareness campaigns for retailers and consumers on food loss and waste.
A holistic approach
SISTERS will be a key EU project addressing the problem in a holistic way, reducing Food Loss & Waste by 27.4% and CO2 emissions by around 20% in the case studies.
Challenges

PRODUCTION
Food surplus due to precise/strict market demands to farmers.

LOGISTICS
Inefficiencies when handling and transporting food.

PROCESSING
Inefficient performance of bio-based food packaging.

MARKETING
Unsustainable marketing practices by retailers and/or wholesalers.

CONSUMPTION
Misinterpretation of labels, exceeded expiration date.

Food loss & waste is a global issue.
Globally, roughly 33% (by weight) of the edible parts of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted, which is around 1.3 billion tonnes of Food Loss and Waste per year.
Only in the EU, we generate every year around 89 million tonnes of Food Loss and Waste, accounting for 20% of the total food produced, with costs estimated at € 143 billion, impacting each stage of the Food Value Chain.
