Brief summary available

In Europe, we generate every year around 89M tonnes of Food Loss and Waste (FLW), accounting for 20% of the total food produced, impacting each stage of the Food Value Chain. In SISTERS, we propose a set of systemic innovations addressed to reduce FLW generated in every stage of the Food Value Chain.

One of the SISTERS’ innovations will be the design and launching of the 1st European Short Chain Platform for farmers to sell their discarded productions.

This feasibility study benchmarks existing solutions in terms of Short Chains in the food sector in Europe as well as existing initiatives in the reduction of Food Losses.

It studies the expectations of a group of Fruits and Vegetables Producers involved in the Sisters Project and analyses the consumers and the market expectations regarding the possible buying of surplus and discarded fruits and vegetables.

It concludes by identifying the core functionalities to incorporate in the Short Chain Platform app to be developed and the key success factors.

REBUS, MTU and AITIIP have defined the requirements and specifications to produce an Integrated Sensors Kit. The kit will be installed in the BulkBox container to monitor CO2, O2, temperature, humidity among other atmospheric parameters and will be deployed during food transportation initially between Spain and Italy. Monitoring of these parameters will assist in assuring food safety and the optimisation of product shelf-life.

The BulkBox Sensors Kit housing prototype has been produced and distributed for partner evaluation in M9 and later the prototype will be optimised for development into a functional BulkBox prototype.

This report pursues the adaptation and scale-up of biobased packaging materials for achieving a range of biodegradable, home-compostable and recyclable packaging solutions that will be tested with different foods under different environments for high replicability. A smart labelling will be also incorporated to these packaging solutions.

The report contains a first section with information about the materials currently used in the food industry for primary packaging purposes and how biobased packaging can be a sustainable choice.

The next section compiles information about the use of enzymatic masterbatches with biopolymers and about the use of bio-based additives from food waste (strawberries, tomatoes, pepper, and mushroom by-products).

The third section regards to the industrial requirements for pilot plants packaging production lines. Finally, the end-of-life properties required to reach home-compostability and to obtain the OK COMPOST HOME certification labels are provided.

This report is a state-of-the-art of the most recent studies conducted on European consumers investigating their perception of bio-based and biodegradable packaging (BBP) which have the potential to reduce both plastic waste-related issues and to better preserve food freshness compared to petroleum-based packaging.

The literature search included consumer studies in English from EU countries over a fifteen-year period from 2008 to 2022 within different thematic areas: consumers’ awareness and engagement, sustainability labelling, sensory and functional packaging characteristics, and physical barriers.

The literature screening resulted in 42 papers, with 61 case studies on consumers spread across 17 European countries which allowed to identify potential barriers limiting the spread of BBP and how SISTERS’ innovation and actions could overcome them.

The Exploitation Plan is part of Work Package 6 dealing with the exploitation of the project, to be delivered on Month 6 of the project execution. This Exploitation Plan presents foreseen activities aimed at using the results of SISTERS in subsequent research and/or development actions by the end-users, scale up and commercialization, creation of services by the industrial and commercial partners, and standardization activities by the relevant stakeholders. And, above all, a detailed investigation is provided on the characteristics of the markets in which the SISTERS innovations are going to be deployed. Its objective is to serve as an exploitation roadmap for the Consortium during the project execution, in a coordinated and comprehensive manner.

The IPR Strategy Deliverable is contained in Work Package 6 of the exploitation of the project, to be delivered on Month 6 of the project execution. This is a confidential document, only available to members of the consortium and the Commission Services.

The aim of this document is to describe the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) management procedures and strategies of SISTERS. The information reported here is useful to SISTERS’ partners since it is the initial blueprint towards the identification and effective management of the IP used in the project and generated by it, with a review of the available tools both to protect their results and to monitor their innovation towards its protection.
