Smart Containers for a Smarter Supply Chain: Exploiting Innovation in SISTERS

The logistics stage plays a crucial role in ensuring food quality, reducing waste, and optimizing supply chains. In the SISTERS Project, Work Package 2 (WP2) focuses on innovative solutions to improve bulk and packed food transportation through Smart Containers, enhancing efficiency and sustainability.

Bringing Smart Logistics to Market

One of the key aspects of exploitation within WP2 is the market launch strategy for the Smart Containers: BulkBox and StoreBox. The consortium is working collaboratively to ensure that these solutions are not just technical innovations but viable products that can be widely adopted across the food supply chain.

The exploitation plan includes:

  • Engaging food processors and logistics operators through targeted communication and participation in key industry events.

  • Publishing guidelines to highlight benefits for the entire food value chain.

  • Creating promotional materials and videos to showcase results.

  • Informational flyers will be out soon to further disseminate key insights and benefits.

  • Spreading results through various platforms to reach a wider audience [Es. Horizon Results Platform].

From Testing to Widespread Adoption

The Smart Containers are being tested under real transportation conditions, covering over 1,600 km across Spain and Italy. During these tests, key factors such as food quality, sensor performance, and sustainability indicators (e.g., fuel consumption, weight reduction, and food waste) are evaluated. These results will support commercialization efforts, demonstrating the tangible benefits of the SISTERS approach.

Scaling Up the Impact

Exploitation means more than just bringing products to market—it’s about ensuring long-term impact and scalability. To maximize adoption, WP2 includes:

  • A dedicated dissemination and communication plan tailored for distributors.
  • Participation in sector-specific events, such as Fruit Logistica, to reach key stakeholders.
  • Workshops and publications in specialized magazines to drive awareness.

With these steps, the SISTERS consortium is committed to ensuring that the Smart Containers become a widely adopted solution in the food industry, reducing waste, improving logistics, and fostering a circular economy.
