Spain Leads the Way in Tackling Food Waste with New Law

Food waste is a pressing global issue, with significant environmental, economic, and social consequences. In response to this challenge, Spain has taken a decisive step forward with the approval of the Food Loss and Waste Prevention Law. This groundbreaking legislation aims to significantly reduce food waste across all stages of the food supply chain, promoting responsible consumption and sustainability.

Why is this law important?

According to the FAO, nearly one-third of all food produced globally is wasted, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and unnecessary resource depletion. In Spain alone, over 1,300 million kilograms of food are discarded annually. This law aligns with the European Union’s Farm to Fork Strategy and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which seeks to halve global food waste per capita by 2030.

A Step Forward in Food Sustainability

Spain’s new law represents a milestone in the fight against food waste. However, its success depends on the commitment of all stakeholders—from producers and businesses to consumers. Adopting a mindset of responsible consumption and valuing food as a precious resource is crucial to making this legislation truly impactful.
